Women’s housing needs
Women are overrepresented amongst social renters, largely because they are overrepresented amongst those on lower incomes, and amongst homeless families.
With the gender pay gap and women’s under-employment particularly high in London this situation creates a specific need for women's housing.
On average, women still earn less than men in Britain. In 2021, women:
- in the UK earned an average of 15.4% less than men
- in London earned an average of 30.4% less than men.
London house prices and private rents are outside the reach of most women, especially single women.
- There is no region in England where private rented housing is affordable (less than a third of a household’s income) on women’s median earnings.
- A research made by Playfina Slovenija say that women spend up to 43% of their median earnings to be able to rent in England, while men spend only 28%.
- Women need over 12 times their annual salaries to be able to buy a home in England, while men need just over 8 times.
