Support with Household Bills
The cost of everyday essentials has been rising in recent years, from household bills to groceries. We are vitally aware of the impact of this, stretching budgets and difficulties in affording escalating bills.
Look below for some advice on how you may be able to reduce your household bills.
Gas and Electricity:
Energy prices are much higher than they used to be. It’s more important now than ever to take control of your energy use and make sure you’re getting the best deal.
Take a look at some tips to help save you money and stay on top of your energy bills:
- Check if you’re on the best available tariff – Contact your supplier to see if a better deal is available or use a comparison website.
- Check for extra support. If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, your energy provider may be able to help review your bill, payment plan, or have hardship funds available. You may qualify for grants or discounts based on your income or situation.
- Check your meter readings regularly and always send in a meter reading when your supplier asks for one. If you don’t, your supplier will use estimated bills which could be too high. Consider a smart meter to track daily costs.
- Be conscious of switching off lights and appliances when they are not in use, small habits can make a difference to the overall cost of your energy.
- Check if you are eligible for the priority services register with your energy supplier, you will often qualify if you are older, have young children, or have a health condition or disability.
- See if you are able to receive a Winter Fuel Payment or eligible for the Warm Home discount scheme.
There are various charities who can support you if you are struggling with bills.
British Gas Energy Trust is an independent charity funded by British Gas and provides money and energy advice. It doesn’t matter if you’re with British Gas or another supplier. Most of their resources or available on the internet. Access support by clicking here.

Water
Water bills can be expensive but there are a few ways to reduce what you pay.
- Make sure you use water wisely, turning taps off when they are not in use.
- You may be eligible for a discount if you are on a low income or receive certain benefits. Contact your water supplier to see if you qualify for any discounts to your bill.
- Check if you can install a water meter. Some properties are unable to be on a meter as they are older Victorian houses converted into flats, but there may be support available in these instances. Contact your water supplier for advice on if a water meter is right for your home.
Visit Thames Water for more information, contact details, and support with your water bill.

Some broadband providers offer tariffs for those on certain benefits, so contact your supplier to see what is available.

Council Tax
You may be eligible for a discount on your council tax bills if you meet certain criteria.
