Brooke House Officially Opens

A landmark scheme offering safe and affordable homes for women has officially opened in Acton.

The opening, on March 24, marked a significant milestone, with the ribbon for the 15-storey block with 102 affordable homes being cut by Kate Henderson, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation.

Brooke House will provide safe, secure and modern homes for women living and working in Ealing, many of whom face housing insecurity due to the gender pay gap, the cost of living, and difficulties in accessing housing as a single woman in London. The scheme will also house essential workers in the local community, including teachers, NHS workers, and transport staff, amongst others, supporting key workers to access homes in the borough.

Brooke House was delivered through a partnership between housing provider L&Q and Women’s Pioneer Housing — one of only two housing associations in the country dedicated to women-only homes. It replaces an ageing estate of 39 flats and more than doubles the number of affordable homes on the site. HG Construction was the main contractor for the project, and Brooke House was completed three months ahead of programme.

Women’s Pioneer Housing was founded in 1920 by suffragists, who understood the importance of providing women with good quality affordable homes of their own, as part of their wider fight for women’s equality.

The development responds to a growing demand for homes for single women, over 600 of whom are on the borough’s housing waiting list.

The building was officially handed over in a ceremony attended by partners and local councillors including Cllr Louise Brett and Cllr Shittal Manro, as well as representatives from the Greater London Authority. Speeches were given by Adam Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of HG Construction, Tracey Downie, Chief Executive of WPH and Jacqueline Esimaje-Heath, Growth and Sales Director at L&Q. The development comprises beautifully designed communal spaces and landscaped gardens, as well as a striking mural in the entrance foyer, painted by award-winning printmaker and illustrator, Eliza Southwood, who worked closely with the residents to design the piece.

It celebrates women from the past, present and future, working, and enjoying their lives. Emma Brooke, a feminist campaigner after whom the building is named, features in the forefront of the colourful artwork.

The development’s proximity to Acton Town Underground station also means residents will have excellent access to transport links and local services.

Tracey Downie, Chief Executive of WPH said: “We are delighted that our partnership with L&Q has resulted in the UK’s first high rise building specifically designed to provide a good quality home for over 100 single women priced out of London’s rental market.

"Brooke House reflects WPH’s vision to ensure all single women across London have a safe, secure and affordable home. We are honoured that are partners have helped us continue to deliver that vision."

Jacqueline Esimaje-Heath, Growth and Sales Director at L&Q, said: "This development highlights what working in partnership to create people-centred housing can achieve.

“We’re proud to have supported WPH, from the start, in imagining and realising this flagship project, and to see it now open and ready to welcome its first residents.”

Adam Quinn, Chief Executive Officer, HG Construction said: “We are proud to reach handover stage on a development that marks a new era for Women’s Pioneer Housing. Completing the scheme three months ahead of schedule reflects the hard work of our teams and our close collaboration with Women’s Pioneer, L&Q and project partners. Thank you to everyone involved for delivering this scheme with such care and quality.”

Board Chair and Committee Chair Recruitment

Board Chair and Committee Chair roles at WPH

Remuneration: Chair £7,000 and Committee Chair £3,750 per annum

Location: London

Closing Date for Applications:

Chair: Monday, 30th March 2026.

Committee Chair:  Monday 13th April 2026

It is an exciting time to be joining Women's Pioneer Housing (WPH) and our Board. 2026 will be a significant and milestone year for us as we proudly complete two large developments which means we will grow to more than 1,000 properties, becoming a fully Registered Provider.

In the same year we have four Board members completing their tenure limit and we are recruiting to the posts of Chair and three Committee Chairs for our Audit and Risk, Development & Asset Management and People & Governance Committees. We aim to complete the recruitment of our new WPH Chair first, and then involve the successful appointee in the recruitment of our Committee Chairs. We welcome interest and applications for all four posts.

WPH was founded by suffragists in 1920, with the aim of providing women with quality, affordable homes; and over 100 years later we continue that commitment and passion. Our aim is to challenge gender-inequality and provide much-needed homes for women to offer access to safe, secure and quality homes, and enabling women to live a good quality of life.

We are seeking people to join our Board that will bring experience, leadership, challenge, drive and support, to inspire and enable us to continue our journey and to realise our vision and goals.

We are interested in attracting a range of applicants to develop and maintain a strong skills mix and diversity across our Board. Applicants with the following will be particularly welcomed:  previous executive, Committee Chair and NED experience for the post of Chair, and ideally experience of the housing sector and regulation. For our Committee Chair posts, NED and executive level leadership experience together with a professional background relevant to the committee applied for. Recruiting for a breadth of posts, the successful candidates might come from a range of sectors but will bring enthusiasm and a commitment to make a real contribution to WPH.

Enthusiastic about one of our Board opportunities? Have some questions? Do get in touch with Sue Manning, Director, Forest HR: sue@foresthr.co.uk. Sue will be delighted to speak with you and provide an information pack which has a wealth of information on the roles.

If you are interested in joining us to make a real difference, we look forward to receiving an application from you.

Please apply by providing:

  • An up to date CV covering both your leadership experience together with experience in non-executive roles.
  • A brief supporting statement, which covers your reason for applying and how you feel you meet our requirements.
  • Not part of the formal selection process, it would also be appreciated if you could complete the equal opportunity monitoring and declaration of interests’ forms. Copies of these forms are available for you to download below.

Please indicate which role(s) you are interested in i.e Chair and/or Committee Chair, and confirm the specific Committee Chair role you are applying for.

You are welcome to apply for more than one post. The Chair of the Board recruitment will be taking place first.

Updates from RBKC Cyber Attack

Following the recent cyber-attack at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), some of their systems remain disrupted, or are operating using temporary arrangements. This has caused an issue in processing benefits, and we are aware this may affect some residents.

The phone lines at RBKC remain closed, although RBKC has assigned designated Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support Officers at Kensington Town Hall, Horton Street, W8 7NX.

They are open Monday to Friday between 9am-5pm; they will be able to support if you are facing difficulties with housing benefit, universal credit, or require benefit or council tax support.
