WPH working towards a long-term plan for housing in
Right now, there are 8.5 million people in England who can’t access the housing they need. This includes two million children in England living in overcrowded, unaffordable or unsuitable homes.
The total cost to our society caused by poor housing is estimated at £18.5bn per year. The total cost to the NHS is £1.4bn a year.
Despite these figures, the government currently has no national plan in place for housing.
WPH Chief Executive, Tracey Downie, is collaborating with NHF and other housing associations that have the expertise and drive to help fix the housing crisis. With our polling data, we now know that social housing is a key issue for voters.
That’s why we have been working closely with our members through our Meeting Housing Need Group to produce a plan that outlines our vision for a brighter future for housing in the run up to the general election. Together, we’ve produced a report called “Why we need a long-term plan for housing”, that sets out what an alternative vision for housing would look like, and what is needed to get us there.
