History
Women’s Pioneer Housing’s long and fascinating history began in 1920, when its founder Etheldred Browning gathered together a group of like-minded women who were all passionate about addressing the lack of housing for professional working women. They registered WPH as a public utility on 4th October 1920; in 1921, WPH began buying properties in West London and developing them into flats – they were met with overwhelming demand from women keen to become WPH tenants!
In these pages, you can find out more about the history of Women’s Pioneer Housing and explore its Timeline, dating back to the early twentieth century. There’s also more information about WPH’s links to the suffrage movement and feminist organisations, as well as the remarkable story of WPH’s architect, the pioneering Gertrude Leverkus. To hear more about WPH’s history from present day staff and tenants, watch our very special film – Pioneering Courage: the Women’s Pioneer Housing Story.
